GOVERNMENT MEDICAL CHIEF ADVISES SUGAR TAX

Dame Sally Davies is the Chief Medical Officer to the Government. In the annual report just published she advises increasing the existing TAX ON SUGAR containing drinks; the suggestion is to cover a range of foods that are high in sugar, salt, and trans fats with the aim of preventing disease, with an outright ban on added salt and sugar in baby foods. The annual report aims to create by 2040 a healthier England. The key focus is to tackle diet, smoking, physical inactivity, alcohol, and air pollution- these five factors are considered preventable in at least 50% of chronic diseases and 40% of cancers.
